There’s a point to this - I hope…

We’ve all built bridges lately that just have skyrocketed us into one of the best moments of our lives. We’re all one step closer. We all have our dreams literally inches away from us. It’s ridiculous how amazing our chances are and without this program, we would have never met, never loved, never cried and never became the artists we hope to be the rest of our natural lives. 

At the end of E.T., this is specifically why I, myself, cry. It’s because after that rainbow, after everyone smiles at the heavens, it’s over. The minute you hear John William’s hop in and play piano during the credits, it’s done. The movie is over. But what’s worst, there’s no sequel (righteously put, it might have destroyed the respect for the first film anyway, but come on…), there’s no new moments created between Elliot and E.T. and Gurdy and just… no one.

Don’t let that be us. Please. 

I originally wrote about three different versions of these. One I started a week before the program ended. The first one was really teary-eyed and I think the reason why I didn’t use it is because I didn’t want anyone or myself swallowing guilt on not giving every single one of the people in this program a hug and kiss before they left. The second one was way too serious and it sounded like I wasn’t hurt at all that #SQUAD is so far apart now. 

So I settled for this third one. Which has gone through a bit of revision and still is as I’ve finished writing it. So okay - let’s nose dive into this.

Straight up…

Whoever was there during our very first jam session knows that was the BEST jam session ever. No other day came even close to that. And in all honesty, some of the stuff I heard that specific day was some of the best original work I’d heard out of most us until Final Projects. But a lot of us kept wondering why that didn’t work out. 

Well, it’s simply because we all were just living. Not thinking about creating, we just were creating. Before people recognized that there were seven guitars in the room and people started being concerned about whether or not they could be heard - we pretty much got multiple iconic songs that I don’t think I’ll ever forget. But you could be heard - I was monkey in the middle - and I heard you all. I was right smack in the center of the room and to tell you the truth, everyone had found their pocket. Everyone just found what the main line was and each of the people in the room sprouted out from that root and created syncopations of GLORY! Logically that might not make any sense, but it wasn’t supposed to. Emotionally that room was filled with beautiful energy. I’m telling you, NONE OF YOU PLAYED THE SAME LINE. And if you did, there was a different type of soul to you playing it. 

Some people might have gotten uncomfortable because they wanted to lead, other people might have gotten uncomfortable because they had never jammed like that before, some people might have been uncomfortable because they didn’t know anyone. But you know what, none of us judged you. We learned a lot about each other that day, lovely things. We learned our weaknesses and strengths fully in one night. We knew what each other was truly capable of in less than 4 hours. 

There were a multitude of genres creating the same song that day, so no matter who struggled after that day with blending sometimes, know you have the capability because you unconsciously had done it. We all have received the same chance, so please, instead of some of us deciding to turn our backs last minute, stick with us… stay - follow.

I bring that up because that was the day I knew I was going to remember this program for the rest of my life. Until that moment, I had doubts of whether this had the potential to be the #bestsummerever, but after that no matter what happened greater or smaller, no matter if I acted like I didn’t believe it would be, #JamDayOne was my defining moment of knowing I’d be falling in love with every single one of you. Whether that be because of that beautiful voice, those aching vocals that want to scream and escape, them poetic lyrics, your eloquent piano playing, that sexy Moog loop you do, that sultry dreamy guitar atmosphere you create, whether your ass makes me all about that bass, those crashing drums get me jumping whether it be live or digital and even that brilliant production, business and management mind you have for behind the scenes - I knew I could trust you. And I knew I always would.

Alright now here’s the fun part… 

To anyone who feels left out of that conversation because they weren’t there that day during jam time, I’ll tell you what moment was the equivalent of that when we were all involved - and I’ll go on record and say it… 

Probably the #bestclassever with Jeff Rabhan!

Wanna know why? That entire conversation where we dissected the music industry, Jeff slayed labels and we all sat back in awe - we recognized that the world isn’t allowing art to be safe and beautiful like it should be - like we want it. There was immediate uproar. That’s when we all knew we were artists. We were sensitive to that subject so much that none of us barely wanted to leave the class. We were trying to find the loopholes. We were trying to figure out how every damn mainstream artist is standing on top of a empire riddled with bombs and barely notice. That’s how we knew we cared.

Here’s another thing, I know we heard that not all of us “make it” in the industry. I know that’s a very discouraging statement, but to be honest, that only depends on what you consider “making it” is. Heck, you don’t have to be Beyoncé or Justin Timberlake to help the change the world. It’s true. All you have to is come as close to being people like Lauren, Alan, Bo and Marat. That’s life-changing people as well. And I’m pretty sure each of those people feel content with what they’re doing and how they’re doing it. Look at us, we’re crying over possibly losing them.

We need to take a stand as artists, make the world understand that art isn’t just something you use to get money but something that can help save lives and change mindsets. Our platforms as artists effect people worldwide on emotional scales that politics and humanities sometimes can’t alone. We’re always that missing link. That small poster someone is holding during a protest, art, that speech the President stands and relays to us, art, that hand you let out to someone in need, art. You just don’t know it. No one has taught you to think like that. Why would they, we aren’t even considered real working citizens in some people’s eyes.

That’s why Jeff’s conversation with us is so ironic. Every other working citizen in America has fought back when oppressed. Except us, the artists. But then again, us, the artists, does not recognize we’re being oppressed in the first place, and those that do don’t necessarily care. I don’t want any of you to fail.
None of you deserve that. 

None of you deserve to be put down and told that you’ll never make it.
Not after making it through this program.


And a statement like that applies to every Summer ReMu graduate before this and after it. You, are, meant, to, thrive. In every aspect of the word. We might not all do it in the same ways, but we all will do it if we learn to recognize what we really have the ability to do. Until we recognize how much power we have, we’re not really gonna go anywhere. So please, stay, stick with each other and me.

Ugh, I didn’t want to make this so long but, it kinda just happened… 

I’m going to miss you guys. Really. I got to really be myself this Summer. I escaped a lot and was able to just grow with you all. Thank you. Thank you so much for all of that. I might not have made life long relationships with every single one of you but I know I’ll be able to always collaborate with you whenever the time occurs and for that I’m grateful. For that I just, couldn’t ask for more. 

I’m returning home a stronger, smarter and more human individual than when I left honestly. There’s things I received here and learned here that no one knows and that some people out here really deserve to hear. Why? They’re hungry. They’re kind. They’re loving. They want to change things too. They fit in the picture with us. Don’t think that because we’re a family, more people can’t join. I mean, we’re already a part of a bigger family. We’re apart of ReMu, which is apart of NYU Tisch, which is apart of the artists of NYC, which is apart of the artists of New York and America and THE WORLD. We’re so much more than what we may think we are. We have to have open hearts guys. We have to accept others like we accepted everyone here at ReMu.

Okay last thing, promise. 

I just wanted to update you on me…

BECAUSE PLEASE EVERYONE, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH ALL OF YOU AFTER THIS TOO!!! I CAN’T LOSE ANY OF YOU! SERIOUSLY! YOU MIGHT NOT BELIEVE ME BUT I DO NOT LIE!!!!!!!!!

Sometime before I was accepted into this program, I started building a label. An independent one actually. I didn’t really talk about it much because a lot of the particulars are still in the air. My Dad already has the rights to his own organization and LLC so we’re moving into growing a label out of it, among of other things.

Because of all the things I learned in this program, M. StageScene Communications / Blues Bell Music is that much closer to being a real thing for me. And I wanted you guys to know that in case anyone had ways of helping, wanted to help or maybe even be apart of it. 

I’ve already put together a couple of artists, including myself and have about three in-house producers and I’m still trying to grow it. For now, it’s internet based on SoundCloud and DatPiff - with other sites being used for promotion. 

And with that said, Magnificent mixtape/LP was a main work of mine that was apart of the first few projects released by the mock label, and hopefully my next little mixtape/LP Revelations, (which the Performance Class got to get a taste of when I performed that song “Slow Motion”) will be able to be attached to it as well.

So yeah, none of that, “You stay - I go - no following”, unfathomable sadness stuff. That’s not fair to bring at a moment like this. I didn’t say names because I don’t like to single people out and make others feel forgotten. It dates it in a way. It’s like claiming what year this was written or something… that’s not my forté. It makes me feel all woozy. But, I dropped a few hints here and there. I think you’ll pick up on who’s who in this thing…

Seriously guys, please stay in touch with me and especially each other. I’m not leaving the groups, blog, chats or anything until it’s mandatory. I want to know where you are, and who you’re with and what you’re doing. Like I honestly can’t wait to ReMunion and recap.

One of our group chats actually concluded that maybe going to Iceland may be a nice thing. I mean, maybe not there but, you know, somewhere new, adventurous and unprecedentedly beautiful to us all. I feel like we all gotta make a sacrifice this time around to see each other. Especially since some people had to pay hundreds and thousands of dollars to get here to ReMu when others of us only had to spend dollars and some change. 

We’re completely free now guys. We get to roam and do what we can to show that the world is bigger than what people think it is. Show that there’s kindred life upon it you know? People forget how great this place is when you stand still for just a moment. 


So just for a second, don’t move.

But you know, we couldn’t record a 7-8 minute song for Bo’s class, so we just followed the rules. Claire Piorkowski​’s was there too. She added some good energy by just being there and listening honestly.

My freshman year of high school, I got my first pair of Converses. I still have that same pair. They literally were an intricate part of the canvas that helped me build my personal styles as I moved into sophomore and junior year. The brand was everywhere I looked. Whether it be in photos, in newspapers, magazines, in video-games, I recognized the brand - and could tell when people were trying to pose as it as well. They’ve become such a large portion of our American culture that it has become extremely difficult to avoid actually picking up a pair at the nearest mall. 


Think about it…
What makes the popular kids cool? What they wear. And what do they wear? Converse. What does every aspiring hipster wear? Converse! What did basketball players wear in the eras of Chuck Taylor and Kareem Abdul? CONVERSE. When The Warriors were bopping through the streets of New York in ‘79 trying to escape those crazy baseball bat wielding goons, what did they run home to Coney in? CONVERSE! What did Native Americans wear - no, not Converse - but pretty close - I’ve heard moccasins are just as comfortable. 



Now they’re expanding…
With the introduction of Converse Rubber Tracks, passionate up and coming artists everywhere are reaching out to Converse Music in order to help create and polish work they hope to shop to the actual music industry and build connections and fanbases. What’s made this so unadulterated and simply unbelievable is that Converse decided to take this movement worldwide, offering their services to struggling artists - allowing them to book a full day at some of the most famous recording studios around the world for free

It gets better, every participant gets a new pair of Converses to rock out on stage - and if they’re lucky enough to be chosen - can be involved in opening for some pretty big artists that are out right now. A kid such as myself seeing someone such as Action Bronson involved with the project caused me to really shed a tear. It’s a beautiful thing - and they aren’t making a single dime for doing it. 


So what do they gain?
Converse gains respect from people like you and I alike, who simply love music. They get the satisfaction of bringing happiness into the world. And on top of that, they get push their name out there. In the ways that Nike entered the world of Sports - Converse interwove itself into a much more diverse side of our cultures. Music is an everlasting waving, especially in the Western Hemisphere. In the last five years, the amount of options we have to consume music has transcended incredibly. Business wise, this was a truly inventive choice on the part of Converse because not only did I love the brand for style but now I found a new love in their promotion of artistic endeavor. 

In an interesting twist, I personally trust that Converse is changing the way that people are beginning to perceive and indulge in music around the world. How? By reminding us just how important an artist’s look is to how they sound. It’s helping artists become identifiable. 


…I for one cannot wait to witness how far Converse Music will travel in our society and what new ingenious creations for their brand they’ll come up with as we approach the dawn of a new decade…

The above quote was stated by boxing champion Muhammad Ali and I’ve tried my very best to emulate these words as I’ve grown and hopefully continue to grow into the artist I want to be: “The artist who learns and teaches, who without fear can give love as easily as he may receive it, who brings joy and passion wherever they set foot.”

…I want to bring happiness into the world with what I do…

I’m Amir Royale, a 16-year-old aspiring artist, mogul entrepreneur and I am currently a student attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia of Music & Art and Performing Arts. 

I live in St. Albans, New York, a quiet suburb in the midst of Queens that has been known best for being the home base of artists throughout history such as Thomas “Fats” Waller, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald up to even the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown. With that, to say the least, my earliest memories as a kid was listening to jazz and soul. I grew up loving music just as much as your normal kid grew up loving basketball. As I grew into my teens, that love spewed into multiple genres, the primary ones becoming Hip-Hop and R&B.

In that respect, I can simply say just a couple of my inspirations are the names I mentioned just moments ago, but more can be added to list. Early musicians such as Miles Davis and Coltrane have inspired me to take the knowledge I have of instruments to a much more intimate level. Davis’s creation of Jazz Fusion and the countless pieces that Coltrane soloed on throughout his career amaze me and only leave me in awe. Artists such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra have inspired me tremendously on the side of performance. Sammy Davis was both an incredible singer and dancer, his energy upon the stage was not only caused by his charisma but by his movements just as easily. This same charisma factor applies to Sinatra in his smile and postures. Though he never had the same finesse and flavor in movement as Sammy, he did indeed perfect his voice and stage presence without a doubt. In contemporary light, current artists such as Drake, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Logic, John Legend, Jay-Z and Nas have all inspired me with their countless philosophies and skill sets, especially with those of which have changed the perceptions of the Hip-Hop/R&B genres.

My target audience would be people my age. Kids in their teens. Kids who get up everyday, walk and take the bus and train to school. Kids who think they won’t get farther than that bus and train will take them. Kids who don’t chase dreams because too many people say that whatever dreams they still hold on to will never come to pass. I’m trying to reach that girl in the back row of the stadium who thinks she’ll never get to meet me because I’m so far away on the stage. I’m trying to reach that boy sitting in the front row who’s always felt so alone until he heard my lyrics. I want to have that affect on people. I want to help. I get this heartwarming feeling for what I do. I just love to love. I can’t help it. My art is what helps me release that love into mankind. I want to allow my music to be that little hub people can choose to lock themselves if things get a little two harsh or too much around them. I know I needed it growing up, sometimes I still do and I believe that having that helps you understand who you are inside.

I’ve recently started my own independent label, Blues Bell Music and I’ve been helping to produce artists as well as myself. With the release of my debut mixtape, Magnificent (with promotions of it on DatPiff, SoundCloud, MySpace and Genius.com) I have been in the works of building towards my dream. I’ve recently shopped the mixtape around to labels and I am continuing to advance knowledge of it as I work on newer projects that I am excited to release. Now though, it’s all about me performing live. I need to start touring and performing wherever I can, post it online and get a movement following me. I need to create my fanbase. As difficult as it is, I love the challenge and I’ve continued to work toward it. 

I’m very big on building teams and families to paint masterpieces for people to enjoy. I hope that by working with others, collaborating and building connections that I can get my vision and even the visions of those around me out for the world to enjoy. Anything is possible. Most people just settle for normalcy because everyone else they know gives into it. I can’t let myself be one of those people and because I love you, I’m not going to let you think that way either. Care about yourself and know your value, it’s more important than anything in the world we have found ourselves in.
